Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is pushing to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
The Red Devils have already signed England international Mason Mount from Chelsea as their first major transfer move of the summer window.
However, Ten Hag needs more new faces to cover other key positions, especially now that experienced goalkeeper David de Gea has officially left the club following the end of his contract.
De Gea moves on after 12 seasons in between the Old Trafford posts, with Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana linked as his possible replacement at United.
Andre Onana to Man United: Latest transfer news updates
As of July 16, it appears United are on the verge of finalising deal with Inter Milan to sign Onana.
Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic reported that the Red Devils were expected to agree terms with Inter on July 16. There was a breakthrough in talks over personal terms with the player the day before, and he is expected to sign a five-year deal with the Premier League club.
The remaining issue seems to be over the transfer fee. United's reported opening offer of around £38 million / $49.8 million was rejected, with Inter holding out for closer to £51.5m/$67.4m. A compromise is expected to be reached, however.
Cameroon international Onana was a crucial part of Inter Milan's march to the 2023 Champions League final as Simone Inzaghi's side lost out to treble-winning Manchester City in Istanbul.
His performances for the Italian giants in an eye-catching debut season at the San Siro attracted growing attention, with Chelsea also previously linked, but United began to make a move in earnest to sign him when it became clear De Gea would be leaving.
As per reports from the Daily Mirror, Ten Hag has a £120m/$152m summer budget to work with as club buyout talks continue, and the deal for Mount has erased almost half of that. Any additional funds at the manager's disposal would have to be generated through player sales.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on July 8 that there was confidence an agreement would be reached in the coming days and that, in fact, Onana had already signed off on the move.
It had looked as though the future of Romelu Lukaku may influence the Onana deal, as Inter were keen to re-sign the forward permanently from Chelsea, and funds generated by selling their goalkeeper would have been key to that.
However, widespread reports indicate Inter have withdraw their interest in the Belgium international after becoming angry that he held talks with rivals Juventus over a possible move to Turin.
Still, Inter are expected to give the green light to Onana's departure and have reportedly earmarked Bayern Munich's Yann Sommer as a replacement. The Switzerland goalkeeper would be available for just £5.2m/$6.7m.
United are expected to sell Dean Henderson, who is wanted by Nottingham Forest, which would help to offset some of the cost of signing Onana.
Could another club sign Onana?
The former Ajax keeper is said to be attracting attention from clubs other than Man United.
Reports from US broadcaster CBS Sports claimed Al Nassr were targeting him as part of the Saudi Pro League's recruitment drive of Europe-based stars.
As part of the stream of players heading to the Middle East, Edouard Mendy is the only top-level goalkeeper to make the switch, and Onana was an option.
With De Gea now a free agent, he is likely to receive lucrative approaches from Saudi Arabia, which could help to pave the way for United to land their main target. Onana is said to be unwilling to move to a non-UEFA Champions League team.
Chelsea, having sold Mendy, have also previously been linked with Onana, but their interest appears to have cooled. New manager Mauricio Pochettino appears content with Kepa Arrizabalaga as his No.1 heading into the new season.
How much is Andre Onana worth?
Due to Onana only being one year into a five-year contract with Inter, the Serie A giants are in a strong negotiating position as they look to secure a high fee.
As per Transfermrkt, Onana is valued at £30m/$38.1m, but Inter have pushed for a much higher fee.
Andre Onana suspension at Ajax: What happened?
Onana joined Inter Milan on a free transfer from Ajax ahead of the 2022/23 season after deciding not to extend his six-season stint in Amsterdam.
Despite being an ever-present figure at Ajax in his first four campaigns from 2016 to 2020, Onana's career suffered major disruption in 2021.
After winning the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup double in 2019, Onana played a reduced role in their double glory of 2021 due to a drugs ban.
He was charged with testing positive for banned substance Furosemide, which he claimed he consumed by accident due to his wife taking the medication. UEFA initially banned him for 12 months before the suspension was reduced to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Ajax stood by their player, who said after UEFA's ruling: "I mistakenly took it for an aspirin because the packaging was almost identical, which I greatly regret.
"I respect the UEFA Appeals Body, but I do not share their decision in this case. I consider it excessive and disproportionate as it has been acknowledged by UEFA that it was an unintentional mistake."
What happened to Andre Onana at the 2022 World Cup?
Onana's comeback in late 2022 meant he was able to be included in Cameroon's 2022 World Cup squad.
He played in their opening group game against Switzerland, in which Cameroon lost 1-0, but he did not play again in the tournament.
After being dropped for the match against Serbia, Onana was sent home by head coach Rigobert Song after an apparent dispute over tactics. The player announced his international retirement in December last year.
